The first official federal census was taken in Madison County, Alabama in 1830. From there, every 10 years, the federal government has taken a census of the population of Madison County. The 1830 and 1840 census only show the head of household by name, and then the amount of members in the household by age. Starting with the 1850 census, however, the entire white population of Madison County was enumerated. Blacks in the 1850 and 1860 census were enumerated separately under the slave schedules. Starting in 1870 all residents of Madison County were enumerated regardless of their race.
